【英语原著读后感】My Review of the Kite Runner

It seems that this is my first time to write and exchange views on a long original English literal novel in English after college graduation. In my view, it is better to write in Bilingual language. But our reading group leader suggests me write in English. So I try my best to finish the writing and exchange views with all of us.

I feel that the Kite Runner is rather like a documentary literature rather a pure novel. since the scenes and occasions happened in Afghan in 1990`s described in this book are well known worldwide. The flames of war raged across the land, the bombs, the skinny children, the refugees, exile, violence, and Taliban terrorism etc in Afghan are as if yesterday in our mind. The whole country was in deep water, it aroused the attention of people all over the world. Many journalists from different countries ventured into the front line to give the firsthand reporting. All the world people know that Afghan was in great tragedy in 1990`s. The author named Khaled Hossseini depicts us vivid actually happened scenery through his plain words, with engraved and memorized human nature characterization, and ups and downs plot. I was fascinated by its resourceful writing. I feel it is like a door opening our eyes to know more and deeply about Afghan, and I was deeply moved by Afghan national spirits.

Three parts give me very deep impression. One is the description of fighting kite, and the other is the story between Amier and Hassan.

EVERY winter, districts in Kabul held a kite fighting tournament, and if you were a boy living in Kabul, the day of the tournament was undeniably the highlight of the cold season. I never slept the night before the tournament. I`d roll from side to side, make shadow animals on the wall, even sit on the balcony in the dark, a blanker wrapped around me. I felt like a soldier trying to sleep in the trenches the night before a major battle, and that wasn`t so far off. In Kabul, fighting kites was a little like going to war. If the kite was the gun, then tar, the glass-coated cutting line was the bullet in the chamber, every boy in Kabul bore telltale horizontal gashes on his fingers from a whole winter of fighting kites. They were reminders of a beloved season that had once again passed too quickly.

From this part, we know more about the country, playing kite is not only the big activity involved with children, but also adults, in different spheres of existence. Kites were the one paper thin slice of intersection between those spheres. The last winner will be praised by the adults, and the children will be considered as smart and brave. Fighting kite symbols national spirit as well, we feel that Afghan people have strong perseverance and fortitude to fight for it. It is the yearning for freedom, and the belief to win. Besides for a Muslin country, we still can feel that there are so many rules and cruel system to control the society and punish people who break it. There are many things that can never be revealed, if revealed, you will lose whatever you have.

The second part is the story between Amier and Hassan. Amier was the son of the master, Hassan was his family servant. They grew up together from their birth. They were not only simple like master and servant, but also bloody brothers. And in the first pages of the novel, it told us: “He wouldn`t deny me. Hassan never denied me anything.” It hinted a special relationship between Hassan and Amier.

As a servant, Hassan served himself to Amier and the family. he devoted himself to Amier unconditionally and unrewardingly. He was a brave and smart boy. He helped Amier won the kite tournament which changed his father impression on Amier. But Amier framed the plot that Hasson stolen the watch, because of this, they were forced to leave the family they lived together for nearly 40 years. And Amier firstly saw his father burst into tears when they left. But in Amier heart, he never forgot what he did on Hasson like stealing some from other person. It was similar with his father. Those thorny old barbs of guilt bore into me once more, as if speaking his name had broken a spell, set them free to torment me anew.

Finally Amier and his father left for America. There gave them peaceful life. But Amier felt guilty of his behavior on Hasson. He went back to Afghan to search for Hasson. That was in the ceaseless fire in Afghan. He wanted to save his restless soul by this way. He said: for me, America was a place to bury my memories. for Baba, a place to mourn his.

The third part I want to mention is the political tendency in this book. Afghan is a Muslim country in Middle East which has a very important and sensitive strategic location on the map. The former Soviet Union invaded the country for nearly ten years. But they finally lost the war for various reasons. It brought the country many sufferings and great tragedies, the country became poorer and poorer. Some extremists joined Taliban group which was considered as terrorism.

For Amier, America was different. America was a river, roaring along, unmindful of the past. I could wade into this river, let my sins drown to the bottom, let the waters carry me someplace far. Some place with no ghosts, no memories, and no sins. If for nothing else, for that, I embraced America.

From this part, we strongly feel that even the people at the bottom of the society in Afghan hated for the betrayal behavior for their home country, they had the bias on those who left their country for America, but the people like Amier and his family have obvious political tendency to America which offered humanitarian assistance.
